ST. LOUIS, MO — March 15, 2023 — ThrottleNet named the #1 Cybersecurity Firm in St. Louis by Small Business Monthly, is issuing a warning to area businesses and organizations to be aware of an increase in cyberattacks in 2023.

“Media outlets are reporting a large number of growing cyberattacks and several are of extreme nature,” said George Rosenthal, President of ThrottleNet. “These include breaches ranging from government agencies to union organizations, to school systems and even fast-food chain restaurants.”

According to Rosenthal, one breach occurred in mid-February with the U.S. Marshals Service which suffered a ransomware attack. “Some of the service’s most sensitive information was compromised including law enforcement materials, personal information of employees and even potential targets of federal investigations.”

“A Pipefitters Union in Boston suffered an attack that resulted in a loss of $6.4 million,” he said “SecurityWeek said the evidence points to compromised business email and the incident is under investigation by private and federal investigators.”

Denver Public Schools were victims of a damaging hacking incident at the beginning of 2023 Rosenthal added. “The hacking incident disclosed the personal information including Social Security and banking numbers of an estimated 15,000 system employees.”

Even popular fast-food restaurants are getting hacked. “Multiple media outlets reported Chick-fil-A suffered a hack where over 71,000 customer accounts were breached in a month-long credential stuffing attack. Access was gained to membership numbers, mobile pay numbers, and masked credit/debit card numbers,” he said.

Proper team training and cyber due diligence are crucial. “Many solutions are obvious but overlooked. These include patching systems regularly to cover vulnerabilities, optimizing proper password and email protection with strong passwords used for every account, and the use of MFA (Multifactor Authentication).”

“We also recommend a more intense layered approach with EDR (endpoint detection and response) and DNS (domain name system), paired with a 24/7 Security Operations Center (SOC) to handle response and remediation of any threats. We call it MDR Managed Detection and Response.”

“It’s important companies protect what is valuable to them, not only their data but also their people.”
